With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ronald Eugene Fletcher, affectionately known as Ronnie. Ronnie was the first child born to Dorthy Jo Bedford and Verdell "Bunny Boy" Fletcher on May 17, 1947. Ronnie grew up in the Austin area and St. John’s Community attending Austin Public schools. Ronnie was a member of the L.C. Anderson class of 1965 and participated in sports and excelled on the track field. Ronnie was a man of boundless energy and zest for life, from an early age Ronnie loved to run and found a home on the track field and was happiest leaving others behind him as he turned on the jets in races.
Ronnie professed his faith in Christ at Blacks Memorial church under the leadership of the late Rev. I.W. Robinson. At the time of his passing he was a member of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston Texas under the leadership of Pastor Marcus D. Cosby.
After High School Ronnie joined the United States Army where he honorably served for four tours during the Vietnam war. Ronnie received an honorable discharge from the US Army. Upon his return to Austin, he found employment in various roles, including bartending, always infusing his work with the same energy and enthusiasm he exhibited on the track field.
Ronnie loved family and often lived with his grandmother Pearl Fletcher, assisting her around the house and helping out in the kitchen with Sunday dinner. Ronnie was the adult supervision to his nieces and nephews while their mother, Frances worked. He had a youthful spirit and was known to show off his speed and athletic skills. In the later years Ronnie loved watching old westerns and traveling to visit family. He often called to check in with the older relatives.
Ronnie was a jokester and could get you laughing on your worst day; he was also a daredevil and would not hesitate to accept a challenge from jumping in the lake to rolling down a hill. Ronnie had a profound impact on those around him; he taught us importance of enjoying life.
Ronnie had one son Berrill Carson. Later in life he met and got engaged to Debra Griffin, they shared no children but enjoyed spending time together.
On August 5, 2025, the Lord called Ronnie home to join the angels, his parents, brother Raydel and sister Brenda. Ronnie leaves to cherish his memories his longtime partner Debra Griffing, his son Berrill Carson; grandchildren Melonie, Arabella and Kayden Carson; Sisters Frances Hill (Rodney), Linda Fletcher-Fowler, a host of nephews and nieces among other family members and friends.
Ronnie leaves a legacy of service to this country, his family and to his Savior.
