Norman Wilfred Scales Obituary (1945

Norman Wilfred Scales passed away on November 15, 2022. He was born on October 25, 1945, in Austin Texas. He is survived by his wife Denese Scales and daughter Grace Scales and two children from previous relationships: Norman W. Scales III and LaTonya Traylor, as well as a granddaughter, one brother, Ronnie D. Scales of Houston, Texas, a great uncle, Dr. Audrey (wife Tillie) Mackey, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Lydia Verlena Mackey Scales, a retired educator, and father Norman Wilfred Scales Sr., an original Tuskegee Airman. Norman was a proud graduate of the original L.C. Anderson High School class of 1963. He was a talented saxophonist, and he spent his junior and senior high school years playing music and forming bands. He attended Prairie View A&M College of Texas, where he studied music and worked as a studio musician for Don Robey's Peacock Records. After college, Norman toured military bases across the Southwest. Norman went on to work in various industries. He was a true embodiment of resilience and tenacity for success. Despite starting from entry-level positions in various industries, he always worked hard and showed his abilities, resulting in him rising to mid-management roles. Starting as an assembly worker at Glastron Boats' manufacturing plant and rising to management. He also worked as a clerk and rose to store manager and district manager at Pay-Less Gas convenience stores. At Eckerd's drug store he went from clerk to store manager. Norman would leave retail to become an independent mortgage broker however after the Savings and Loan crisis, he left the mortgage brokerage business and went to work for the United States Postal Service in Dallas and where he retired as a mail carrier in Austin. Throughout his career journey, Norman faced difficult racial climates but never lost the drive to succeed or find ways to overcome obstacles. Norman was an avid stock and Forex investor and even taught Forex classes. He was also a recreational pilot and owned a plane with two friends from Dallas. He and members from the old neighborhood all started flying inspired by his father Norman Scales Sr. Norman's life was a testament to his perseverance, talent, and love for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
