Mortimer Hanna was born on November 7, 1960 at Homestead AFB, Florida, to Thomas Eugene Hanna, Sr and Bertha Lee Hanna. He was the second oldest of four siblings, with an older brother, Thomas Jr, a younger brother, Charles, and a younger sister, Lawana. Mort grew up in an air force family moving around the country. When his father was stationed overseas, Mort, his mom, and his siblings spent a significant amount of time in his parents' hometown of Richmond, Indiana with his large extended family. Many memories were made playing with cousins, hanging out with grandparents, aunts, and uncles, and spending Friday nights playing records in the garage and dancing with his momma. When his dad was home, they enjoyed camping and fishing. He loved playing at the boys club and was a young deacon at Mt Moriah Baptist Church. His all-time favorite sport was basketball. He always said he may not have been the most talented, but he was going to outwork everyone on the court. After graduating from Richmond High School in 1979, he played one year of basketball at IU East, but decided to withdraw from school to help support his mom and his siblings after his parents divorced. He worked various jobs, holding down two or three at a time, before getting laid off due to the economy. Not wanting to be a burden, he told his mom he was moving to Texas, taking his brother Charles with him, and he would come back to get her and his sister - a promise which he kept. He arrived in Texas in the summer of 1981 and met Anna, which began a friendship that turned into a love that would sustain him for all his days. Mort and Anna married on August 31, 1985 and started a family soon after. Over their 36 years of marriage, they raised seven beautiful daughters, Whitney, Jessica, Lauren, Christina, Grace, Bethany, and Caitlyn. Mort gave 100% to whatever work was put before him. He began his career in Austin at Grainger, starting part-time unloading trucks in the warehouse. Over the course of 9 years he worked his way up to warehouse manager. He left that position to help Anna build a successful grooming business. In 1992 he took on part-time work at Bannockburn, which created a love of serving his church family. Three years later he took a position as a shipping manager to provide for his growing family. But after a few years he was laid off, which gave him the opportunity to start his own commercial cleaning business, which he named Eagle Building Maintenance based on his favorite verse, Isaiah 40:31. While continuing to build his business, Mort came back to Bannockburn in 2005 as the facility manager. As the self-described "Minister of Toilets" Mort served all who stepped on the campus with great joy and enthusiasm. He resigned in 2014 to expand his business full-time, which enabled him to employ others and spend more time with his children and grandchildren. Mort was known for his contagious joy and laughter. No one was safe from his pranks at home or work. The root of that joy was his faith in Jesus Christ. Mort gave his heart and life to Jesus on October 28th, 1990, along with his wife Anna, and the two of them committed to build their life on the truth of God's Word. They joined Bannockburn Baptist Church in December of 1990 and gained a huge family of brothers and sisters in Christ. Affectionately known as Poppy by his family, he will be missed more than we say, but we rejoice that he is whole and healed and dancing with his Savior who he loved so much. Mort's legacy will be carried on by his beloved wife, Anna Marie, his daughters, Whitney Marie Carlson (Casey) of Austin, TX, Jessica Nicole Jones (Brandon) of San Jose, CA, Lauren Elizabeth (Arthur) of Los Angeles, CA, Christina Lee of Austin, TX, Grace Katherine of Austin, TX, Bethany Joy of Austin, TX, and Caitlyn Ruth of Austin, TX, his grandchildren Casey Jr, Declan, and Evangeline, aunts, uncles and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. His memory will cherished by his brothers, Thomas Eugene Hanna, Jr (Rhonda) of Houston, TX, Charles Edward Hanna of Austin, TX, his sister Lawana Hanna-Johns (Billy) of West Melbourne, FL, his father's wife Emma Hanna of Austin, TX, and his bonus sister Vanesa Harris (Jackie) of Austin, TX. He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Eugene Hanna, Sr, his mother Bertha Lee Hanna, his bonus sister Nicole Craft, his sister-in-love Rachelle Covey, and his son Michael.
