Michael Vontean Williams

–

Austin, Texas

Michael Vontean Williams was born on July 5, 1949, in Rochester, New York, to the late Lenora and Clark W. Williams. He was lovingly raised by his parents and his beloved grandmother, Sarah Burgess—all of whom preceded him in death. After a brief illness, Michael peacefully departed this life on October 3, 2025.

Michael was a faithful member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Rochester, New York, until 1967, when he left home to attend Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas. There, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and made lifelong friendships. While at Huston-Tillotson, Michael played basketball, joined the brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, and became affectionately known to many as “Boogaloo” or “Vontean.” He graduated in 1971.

Michael’s love for sports continued long after his college days. For more than 25 years, he proudly served as an official with the Austin Basketball Officials Association and the Austin Football Officials Association. His integrity, mentorship, and passion for the game earned him the respect and admiration of fellow officials, coaches, and young athletes alike.

Michael later joined St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Richard Coaxum, where he remained a devoted member until his passing.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted daughter, Rashida Williams of Killeen, Texas; two loving brothers, David W. Williams (Debra) of Chicago, Illinois, and Ronald J. Williams of Rochester, New York; and two grandsons whom he deeply adored, Daejon Spead and Jaelon Spead of Killeen, Texas. He is also survived by his special friend, A. Renee Dailey of Austin, Texas; his former basketball coach and lifelong friend, Coach Charles Dubra; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, his church family, many dear friends, and countless young athletes he mentored along the way.
Michael’s life was a true testament to faith, family, and community. He will be remembered for his warm smile, encouraging spirit, and unwavering love for others.
