Katheryn Hammond Obituary (1926 - 2018)

Katheryn Hammond received her heavenly wings quietly on Tuesday, August 28, 2018. Katheryn was born on July 15, 1926 to Willie Etta Hill and Charlie Green. Katheryn graduated from L. C. Anderson High School, where she was a Yellow Jackets cheerleader. She also attended Huston-Tillotson College, where she met George Hammond, to whom she was happily married for 52 years. Although "Aunt Kat" did not have any children, she raised her niece Janice Jones (Sawyer), and shared "grandmother" role with her sister to Janice's children, Demetria, Kimberly, and Angela. From the time she was a child, Aunt Kat was a nurturer. She was always available to help family and friends through sicknesses and ailments, or just to share her smile and kind spirit. When she retired from Arnold's Nursing Home in 1980, she became the caretaker of her grandmother, Rose Etta Hill. Aunt Kat also continued to assist her mother with managing a group home for persons with disabilities. It was in the group home that she met and adopted Douglas Lewis as a brother. Doug called her "Kaflin", and Aunt Kat took care of Doug until she was no longer able to do so. Doug continues to reside with the family. Aunt Kat accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Throughout her life, she remained a faithful member of Greater Mt. Zion, serving in several ministries, including Mission 1, until her health declined. She loved her community and participated in various organizations, including representing Maple Avenue in the neighborhood association. She was a member of the social club, A Club of Three Cities: Austin, San Antonio and Manor, whose purpose was to celebrate weddings and anniversaries, especially anniversaries of those who were widows and widowers. If Aunt Kat felt there was someone that needed help or care, she would find a way to get to them. She knew her family history and could tell of family relations dating back several generations. Our family would like to thank the staff at Walnut Hills Nursing Home for the loving care they provided Aunt Kat for 11 years. Preceding her in death were her husband, George Hammond; mother, Willie Etta Hill Stone; father, Charlie Green; siblings, Ruth Glasper and Jimmie Crayton; and special niece Janice Jones (Sawyer). Katheryn is survived by her brother Thurman Crayton; nieces and nephews, Cynthia Crayton, Gloria Crayton, Demetria Fairley, Kimberly Jones, Angela Hodges, Darrell Crayton, Dwight Crayton; special first cousins, Mildred Carter and the Arnold family; and a host of great nieces, nephews, and friends.
