James Russell was born to the family of Charlie Russell Sr., and Inez Houston Russell, on January 8, 1947 at the Holy Cross Hospital in Austin, Texas, with seven sisters and one brother, James was the baby of the family, he was the ninth child.
James' father was a farmer. James did chores on the farm, picking cotton and pulling corn, and other odd jobs. Most of all he liked driving the tractor.
James attended the Pflugerville Elementary school from the first grade to the eighth grade, this was the qualifications of the school, James then transferred to Hope Well High school in Round Rock, Texas.
James attended Saint Mary Baptist church with the family, upon his Christian belief; he joined the church under the leadership of Reverend R.L. Smith, and was baptized at an early age.
James was very active in church, faithfully he attended Sunday school, he sung in the choir, and was an Usher. After several other Pastors, he continued his membership under the leadership of Pastor Richard Coaxum.
James did small jobs around Pflugerville, cutting grass, landscaping, at the local pet shop, and at Goodwill. James joined the Job Corp, a Subdivision of the military workforce training programs in San Marcos, Texas, he was very proud of himself.
James was a very unique man, he mostly stayed to himself, he took very long walks, that he seemed to enjoy. He was friendly and respectable to whomever he met, if you stopped to talk with him he would give you the best conversation about anything you wanted to talk about.
James never forgot your name or where he knew you from. Whenever family wanted to know about something they would ask James and he would know.
He loved listening to old blues singers B.B. King, Guitar Slim, Elvis Presley, and many others. He taught himself to play the guitar and did a wonderful job.
His favorite sports team was the Dallas Cowboys, Tigar Woods the golfer, Jackie Robinson the baseball player, and the boxer Joe Lewis. James would say the big brown bomber could knock them all out.
